Removal Of Protective Mode

Every time that I'm getting into a movie or a song if it's just a little loud the protection feature turns the sounds off. I've been told that if the speakers aren't properly hooked up with all the positives and the negatives where they should be, that  the receiver goes into protected mode which turns the sounds off if to loud. If that is the case how do you check for proper speaker polarity. If not the case what then? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
