If the Singer S900 Inspiration sewing machine's automatic buttonhole feature is not functioning properly, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
  1. Ensure correct buttonhole foot: Make sure you are using the correct buttonhole foot for your machine. Different buttonhole sizes require specific buttonhole feet. Refer to your machine's manual to determine the appropriate foot for the button you are using.
  2. Verify buttonhole size: Ensure that you have set the correct buttonhole size on the machine. The machine needs to know the length of the buttonhole to create it accurately. Some machines have a buttonhole sizing tool or a template to measure the button and set the appropriate size. Check your machine's manual for instructions on setting the buttonhole size.
  3. Check thread tension: Improper thread tension can affect the quality and functionality of buttonholes. Make sure the upper and lower thread tensions are properly set according to your machine's recommendations. Incorrect tension can cause the stitches to be too tight or loose, leading to buttonhole issues.
  4. Clean the machine: Dust, lint, or debris can interfere with the machine's operation. Clean the bobbin area, feed dogs, and any other accessible parts of the machine to ensure smooth movement and proper functioning.
  5. Test on scrap fabric: Try creating a buttonhole on a scrap piece of fabric using the same material you plan to use for your project. This will allow you to troubleshoot without potentially damaging your project. Observe the machine's behavior and the resulting buttonhole to identify any specific issues or irregularities.
  6. Reset the machine: If the machine's settings or functions seem to be behaving abnormally, try turning off the machine and unplugging it from the power source for a few minutes. This can help reset any temporary glitches or errors.
  7. Seek professional assistance: If the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to consult a sewing machine technician or contact Singer's customer support for further assistance. They can provide expert guidance and service if needed.

Remember to consult your machine's manual for specific instructions and recommendations related to your model.
