Singer Sewing Machine Series 5500/5400

I just got this sewing machine and I have read the manual. I cannot get the machine to engage. I am trying to load my bobbin and nothing is working. The mtor will rev up but no action. It states a C4 error but there is nothing binding anything. I haven't made one sticich yet.
