To destroy, remove the disk from the PC. Place it on a solid surface and whack it numerous time with a hammer.
Sure, you're laughing... but this is the ONLY way to securely dispose of a hard disk. By physically destroying it.
To securely erase the disk I recommend Darik's Boot-n-nuke (DBAN). This tool is used by the NSA and the FBI to securely wipe disks drives on their systems.

NOTE: This is permanently destructive tool. Once run the disk will be unrecoverable except with an electron microscope and a few months of labor.
