Why Was The Latch So Poorly Designed?
We've owned the unit for about 7 years. During that time, the door latch has failed twice. We found out from the first failure that the entire door had to be replaced simply because the latch broke. Because of the electronics in the door, its replacement was very expensive. The replacement door broke about 8 months ago and we were VERY DISAPPOINTED to learn that a new door was no longer available. We're retired and on a fixed income, so we haven't replaced the microwave. Instead, we've been holding the door closed using magnets so that the interior light is shut off. To use the microwave, we have to stand in front and apply pressure to the door to enable it to work... the two magnets are not able to close the door sufficiently to allow cooking... just enough to shut off the light. To repeat words from the foregoing, we're VERY DISSAPOINTED... not just that the door was discontinued, but the quality of the latch was so ridiculously designed.
