If I Don't Pay Readers' Digest's Bills For Not Ordered Books What Would Happen?

Dear Sir / Madam, Like many other people across Canada, I am receiving several threatening mails and bills from Readers' Dgest for books that have not been ordered. My question is: If I don't pay Readers' digest's bills for not ordered books what would happen? Can they do any legal action while I haven't ordered any? Do you know anyone who suffered from such legal action from their side?   Thanks,   Monica

It has happened to me more than once.  I ignored the dunning letters and threw them in the recycle bin as soon as I got them.  Eventually (and it may take as much as two years) they will stop.  Nothing else will happen, I assure you.  They will not bother to sue you in court or report you to a credit bureau for owing only $50 or even $100; it's not worth their while.  No one will knock on your door for so little.

Another thing I do with books I do not want to pay for is open the box carefully with a knife (do not open where they tell you) and keep the box and all bills and literature that came with it.  Then I leisurely read the book.  When I'm finished, I put it back in the box and reseal it with glue so that no one can tell it has been opened.  Then I take a black magic marker and cross out my address.  I draw a number of arrows pointing to the return address and I print in large letters "REFUSED" on the front of the box.  I then drop it in any mailbox (no postage is needed since it's being refused) and the Post Office does the rest.   Got it?

Best of luck always,

Gabe
