I know this was asked a long time ago, but I didn't know how to setup Optical for TV on my RT2911 either. Here is the answer:

1. If TV has an optical digital audio output, connect it
to the OPTICAL jack on the rear panel of the unit.
2. Press ONR26;OFF on the remote control to switch
on the unit.
3. Press TV button to select TV mode.
4. Press the SETUP button to show setup options.
5. Press </> unit DIMMER 0/DIMMER 1, CTR
YES/CTR NO, SUR YES/SUR NO or ANALOG are
displayed.
6. Press ^/v to select among HDMI 1 / HDMI 2 /
HDMI 3 / OPTICAL / COAXIAL / ANALOG to match
your connection (OPTICAL). Your selection will be
stored for future use automatically.
7. Switch on the TV.

That is from the RT2910 manual, because I no longer had my RT2911 manual and couldn't find a copy online. Basically you will press the "TV" button on your front panel, then press the "SETUP" button on the front panel. For me, when I press SETUP the first thing it shows is "DIMMER0" for you it might be something different, but all that matters is that you are in the setup menu. Use the directional buttons (surround, preset, tuning) on the front panel to navigate this menu. You want to find the menu option that says one of these [HDMI 1 / HDMI 2 / HDMI 3 / OPTICAL / COAXIAL / ANALOG] and then navigate to OPTICAL. If you did it correctly, on your front panel the display should switch from say TV: HDMI 2 to TV: OPT.
