The '1' Doesn't Come Over When The Incoming Call Is Stored

When I get a call from an out of area number, the LCD shows 1 XXX-XXX-XXXX.  When I ask the phone to store the name and number, the 1 (that I need to actually dial the number) does not get recorded. (e.g., only the XXX-XXX-XXXX is in memory.  Additionally, there seems to be no way to "insert" the "1" into the stored number.
