Keyless Entry Remote Programming, Not Able To Enter Programming Mode...

I bought a new remote for my 2001 Aztek. I was given instructions and have also researched alternative ways to enter the remote programming mode. I have yet to hear any chime or see anything that indicates I'm in programming mode. Any suggestions?
