Is It Broken?

Hello! I recently bought a Polaroid Sun Autofocus 660 Land Camera at a yard sale. It seems to be in good condition, but of course it does not have any film with it. I was wondering if it is broken because the flash doesn't seem to charge. Do you have to have film before you know if it will work? or can you determine if it is broken even when you don't have film? I read online that the camera's flash could charge without film, but any further information would really help! thank you!

On this site (helpowl.com) it has the manual for the Sun 660 and Sun 660 AF, and it says that the flash only needs the energy from the battery in every film pack. I was concerned the camera I bought today for $1 was broken, but I am now hopeful that when I get film it will be fine. My camera shows no signs of life at the moment. I have another old Polaroid 600 camera (cant remember name) and it charges without film whenever I unfold the flash portion. I guess the Sun 660 is just different!

I hope this links to the PDF Manual: http://www.helpowl.com/manuals/polaroid-660-user-guide-03aa380.pdf
