Dropped Hold Calls

Why does the telephone drop a call after being placed on hold for 2 seconds? The phone system we utilize is 3 phones with 2 phone lines. When an incoming phone call is put on hold the line is dropped and the phone can not keep the call on hold. Is there any way for a self fix without having to return the phone?
