Why Did My Service Engine Soon Light Come On On My 2003 Oldsmobile Alero?

Simply put, the computer has detected a fault with the emissions, and has stored a code that can be retrieved with a scan tool.
Sometimes it's just a fluke, and if it isn't detected again in 3 drive cycles, the computer will clear the code and turn the ses light off by itself. But if the light never clears, you have a bad component that needs to be replaced.
