We have the same problem. It is the Blend door actuators (dual control). Both driver and passenger sides. If you take them out (not easy job) and then take them apart , they have a small white plastic "gear-type" wheel inside. On both of them the gear wheel is cracked. The gear opens and closes the blend-doors..hence the dual control "flap" doors for heat and a.c.

Our son found them and the problem by searching online. He then went under the dash on both sides and took them out. The new actuators were $140 EACH from our local O'Reilly's auto parts store (later found out that they would have been over $300 total from dealer. And our local mechanic would have charged $345 per side to fix. NOT CHEAP...but also not an easy job either. Not much room t  work under the dash.
