Depending on which type of crankshaft oil seal, replacing the crankshaft oil seal can be easy. Replacing the front crankshaft oil seal is easier and unless you have all the equipment it is advisable to have the rear crankshaft oil seal replaced by an auto mechanic. Step 1 – Lifting the Car

Before replacing the front crankshaft oil seal, put the car up in the air. Remove the front wheel and place the jack stand under to support it.

Step 2 – Remove the Belt

Next, you need to remove the serpentine belt on the engine. Use the 3-inch breaker bar to do this. Get the breaker bar on the tensioner and lift it up. Pull out the belt from the alternator and totally remove the belt. Remove the belt from the crankshaft as well.

Step 3 – Take out the Splash Shield

You then need to remove the splash shield that houses the front crankshaft oil seal. The splash shield is located inside the wheel well next to the engine.

To remove the splash shield, remove the push pins on top of the splash shield. Use a panel remover to remove the center of the pin. After prying out the center of the pin, remove the push pin holding the splash shield. Once all the push pins are removed you can now removed the shield. You can then see the crankshaft.

Step 4 – Taking out the Crankshaft Oil Seal

Remove the 15mm-headed bolt holding the crank pulley. Next take out the bolts and the pulley. You can now see the crankshaft. Pry out the shield, which is the round ring-like metal situated on the center, using a screwdriver to get to the crankshaft oil seal.

Step 5 – Replacing the Crankshaft Oil Seal

Before you replace the old crankshaft oil seal, check out how deep it goes to make sure that you are able to properly replace it with a new one. You can now put in the new crankshaft oil seal.

Make sure that the new one is properly embedded. Use a soft hammer and tap the oil seal lightly until it is firmly in place.

Step 6 – Replace Everything

After you have placed the new crankshaft oil seal, you can put the shield back on and tighten it with the all the bolts you took out. Put back the splash shield and replace the push pins. Once you have tightened all the push pins, you can then put back the serpentine belt. Make sure that the bolts and the belt is properly placed before putting the wheel back in.
