Remove the Throttle Body
- 1
Make sure the engine and all components are completely cool. Disconnect the battery ground. Then isolate it to avoid accidental contact with the terminal while installing the throttle body. Drain the engine coolant into a sealable container.
- 2
Relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Keep in mind that the pressure in the lines is maintained even after the car is cool. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the IAC valve and from the sensors for the TPS and the MAF.
- 3
Pull the cruise control cable and the accelerator control cable off the bracket for the accelerator control and the level to the throttle body. Remove the retainer clip that holds the electrical harness on the accelerator control cable bracket.
- 4
Label the vacuum hoses and their connections on the throttle body. Disconnect the vacuum hoses.
- 5
Loosen and remove the fasteners that hold the throttle body in place. Lift the throttle body off the manifold. Place a clean shop cloth over the opening to prevent debris from falling into the engine.
- 6
Clean all old gasket material, carbon deposits and dirt from the mating surfaces on the throttle body assembly and the intake manifold. Take care not to damage the surfaces while cleaning them.
- 7
Position the accelerator controls bracket on the throttle body. Torque the fasteners to 12 foot pounds. Put a new gasket, new inserts as needed and new studs on the throttle body.
- 8
Set the throttle body assembly over the intake manifold. Torque the bolts to 89 inch pounds. Torque the fasteners on the throttle body support bracket to 89 inch pounds as well.
- 9
Use the labels on the vacuum hoses to reconnect them to the throttle body. Reinstall the retainer clip for the electrical harness.
- 10
Install the cables for the accelerator control and the cruise control to the cable bracket. Reconnect the electrical connector sensors for the MAF, TPS and IAC valve in the reverse order of their removal.
- 11
Put the air cleaner intake duct in place. Refill the engine with the proper type, mix and amount of coolant. Secure the radiator cap.
- 12
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal and tighten the bolt. Start the engine. Check for leaks and make the necessary adjustments. Test the coolant level and add coolant as needed.

Dogs, cats and farm animals will drink coolant that is left in open containers or on the floor and ingestion is usually fatal. Reuse coolant unless it is contaminated or old.
-
Never smoke or expose an open flame of any kind to the area near fuel-related engine parts.
