Beeping Inconsistently

I tried opening my door on the driver's side with the smart key but it would not respond.  Later, I was driving when a series of beeping with no warning light came on in the car.  It happened again later. I have been careful about not leaving the lights on as well; is it the car battery or is it the key battery? (The key responds to any of the other smart buttons)
