If you're experiencing a situation where your 2004 Nissan Maxima's engine occasionally dies, and you need to reset the shift lock at the same time, there could be a few potential causes for this issue. Here are a couple of possibilities:
  1. Faulty Idle Air Control Valve (IACV): The IACV regulates the engine's idle speed. If it becomes clogged or malfunctions, it can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly. At the same time, the shift lock may engage, preventing you from shifting gears. Cleaning or replacing the IACV might resolve the issue.
  2. Transmission Interlock System: The shift lock mechanism is designed to prevent shifting out of Park without the brake pedal being pressed. If there is a malfunction in this system, it could cause the engine to stall simultaneously with the shift lock engaging. Inspecting and potentially repairing or replacing components related to the shift lock and transmission interlock system might be necessary.
