Check Engin Light

My mechanic pluged into the computer and found that I have a evap trouble I have had a similer problem several years back and the dealer replaced a canister that is located in the driver rear. Is the canister what was bad or was it the valve that was attached? and if its the valve how can you till if its bad? Thanks for any hlep!
