Replacing the valve cover gasket (or gaskets) is not difficult. What might be a hassle are the number of parts you have to unbolt to be able to remove the valve cover. If there aren't too many parts in the way, go for it.

The number one rule is cleanliness. Be sure to remove every bit of the old gasket on the cover and on the engine cylinder head. Carefully scrape the old gasket material off of the head with a razor blade. Spray the valve cover with carb cleaner and wipe it clean with paper towels. Spray the paper towel with carb cleaner and then wipe around the edge of the head where the valve cover goes. Do NOT spray into the inside of the head where the valves are located!

Some gaskets require blue RTV sealant on part of them or even on the whole gasket. The directions that come with the gasket will usually tell you where to apply the sealant. Read the application instructions on the sealant tube before doing anything as well. One rule on sealant is to set the gasket in place and don't move it. Bolt it down as soon as possible and do not over tighten the bolts so that the sealant squishes out of the side of the cover. Again, it's not a hard job, but if you don't do it by the book, it will still leak and you will have wasted your time and money on the project.
