Timing Problems?

how do i know when the timing is off?

The best and safest wayto tell is to disconnect the battery and pull the valve cover off the head with the number 1 cylinder. Then rotate the under drive pulley until the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center of the compression stroke.if the valves are not closed and the distributor rotor doesn't point to the number 1 cylinder then the timing is off. this method can take some time but is least likely to damage the valves or pistons if it is a zero tolerance motor. the fastest way is to turn the car over and if it spins fast and then real slow off and on that is a tell tale sign of being out of time. I hope this helps.
