What is Microsoft Genuine Advantage and why is it asking me if I am genuine?

I wish my computer would stop bugging me about becoming genuine - whatever that means.  I have a policy of not clicking things I don't understand with all the news you hear about viruses and fishing and what not.  I finally clicked it at it gave me this message "Validation is not currently supported for this version of Windows or for this non-Microsoft operating system." but it keeps bugging me every time I turn the computer on.

I am sure I am genuine - is there any way just to turn this program off?

Microsoft's OSes have a tendency to phone home if you know what I mean.  If they think you are doing something with their software that they don't approve of, the typically try to get you to participate in their genuine advantage program.  That is probably what is happening.
