Clutch Problem

!996 mystique I've purchased just recently with 175k miles has 5 spped manual trans . Has been running ok for the thousand miles I have driven it. Went to use it the other morning and can not shift gears. Clutch pedal is some what musht with some play in it. I can tell it's not "disengaging" the gears to allow shift action. What are the possible and most probable reasons for failure Thanks norm
