Maytag Centennial Washer

The washer started working with the lid up!  I closed the lid. Unplugged and replugged it.  Still wouldn't start at the beginning.  The lid doesn't open like it should -- press 3 seconds.  Not a chance.  Any ideas?  Just buy a washer with an agitator or sink some more money into this?  Doesn't wash clothes well either.
