Why Isn't User Instructed To Remove Racks Before Using Self Cleaning Feature?

My oven is less than 6 months old and I decided to use the self cleaning feature for the first time.  My home was filled with smoke and the oven racks turned brown! Now the racks have to be forced in versus sliding easily before the self cleaning.  Any suggestions on how to restore the racks to their original shiny look and how to eliminate the smoke that was emitted?  Very disappointed!!
