You plug the magicJack into a free USB port, then plug your phone line into magicJack. (The magicJack comes with a 6-inch USB extension cable in case it interferes with other devices plugged into your USB ports.)

magicJack includes a local number as part of the service, for most metropolitan areas. Here's a lengthy list of supported area codes, and here's a longer list that includes local prefixes.
