Engine Oil 2005 Lincoln Navigator

I had lost my oil service sticker. Today I was driving and the engine light went on. We pulled over and checked there was no oil. Added 3 qts and the light remains on. There was no indicator that came on to tell me to check oil. Only this engine light. After I added oil it allowed me to drive home 40 miles with no issues. I was going to take it and have the oil changed however my husband thinks better to go the the mechanic. Any thoughts? And why would an oil indicator not come on.
