1998 Lincoln Continental Overheating

After replacing the water pump and thermostat, my car is overheating. After traveling about three (3) miles or so, the engine starts overheating. As long as I turn on the heater while driving, the temperature remains in the "safe" zone. I am confident that the water pump installation was successful and correct. The thermostat was tricky to replace and get the O-ring seated properly because gravity makes it want to fall out, but I did accomplish that (no leaks). 1) Radiator fans come on (low) rather quickly after startup, and high speed fan setting kicks in with AC on (as they should). What's wrong?

Erratic engine coolant temperature or intermittent overheating can be caused by corrosion inside the water pump. The impeller may spin on the water pump shaft or the impeller may corrode. Either condition reduces coolant circulation resulting in engine overheating.
