Jeep Patriot 2012 Dome Light

At 4 a.m. in the dark, I backed up my car, not being able to turn off the dome light. It was very bright, making it difficult to see to back up. Ended up in ditch. Question is how can one turn off the dome light when it doesn't go off itself? Stayed on for about 20 minutes. Of course I had pushed the buttons trying to turn the light off. To no avail.
