Short Thru Block

have engine that wont stay running, previously had faulty crank sensor and timing belt, but then two weeks a no start/ spark condition occcured in which the last mechanic gave up on, subsiquently leaving me to inherit this problem. after chasing the problem I found A faulty ignition fail switch which I replaced, this allowed the vehicle to start but wouldnt run above 2500 rpm. while running the car died with a strange noise. I then cranked it again for about 60 seconds only to see smoke coming from engine compartment I looked to find the ground cable from the intake manifold to fire wall burned. after replacing ground strap I hooked up a scanner to find no trouble codes but when cranking I observed 98% engine load as well as the tach jumping from 0 to 2000 and back with each crank as well as what seemed like an out of time (180) engine. I have found no mechanical problems nor mechanical timing issues but am wondering if the starter or alternator are possibly grounding out causing the electrical failures. I also am thinking the ecu is now cooked after the ground strap incident thus causing the timing to be erratic. if there is anyone out there who might be able to give a direction to resolve the electrical barbeque that is occuring here I would be so very thankful
