I am changing my engine. It is a 1998 Elantra 2.0L DOHC engine.
The manual I am using is for 1996 through 2001 Elantra.
I guess the timing marks will be the same then for 2.0L 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01.
So, when you set them in place, have the No 1 piston at Top Dead Center.
(No. 1 is the one next to the timing belt. )
(If your belt was broken, you can turn cam sprocket first until you see the Intake valves close
and the word up reaches the top of the cam sprocket. Then you can use a compression
gauge to alert you when the no. 1 piston is on its compression stroke.)
Now for the marks.
The cam sprocket has two marks on opposite sides and the word UP on one of the spokes.
Get "UP" on the top and the two marks lined up with the top of the cylinder head.
They will not be horizontal (9 and 3 o'clock), perhaps closer to 8:43 and 2:12 o'clock.
You will also be able to see a painted mark if you peek through a little hole in the spoke that says up.
Then the crank shaft mark will need to line up with a bump in the casting at about 10 clock.
Get the belt on and tighten the tensioner then turn the belt around once or twice WITH A WRENCH. DO NOT USE THE STARTER, in case your timing is off.
Make sure the marks line up after a couple of revolutions and that the belt moves 1/4 inch with about on the middle of the longest section between pulleys.
That should do it.
Have a nice day.
