Does The T8411r 1002 (2) Model Require Batteries In Order To Adjust Temperature

I cannot raise or lower the temperature settings. When I push either the up or down arrow nothing happens. This was a gradual process. For several months, I would have to press and hold the arrows for one or two minutes, before they would adjust the temperature. Now, nothing happens at all. Everything else works fine on the thermostat.
