Why Does A/c Turn On Then Quickly Off 5 To 8 Times Before Staying On.

Set to 72. unit turns on at 74/75 and turns off at 70/69 when working properly. Recently unit turns on for a few seconds and then shuts off, few seconds later the cyle repeats for about 8 times before unit stays on to cool house to the shut off temp. a/c repair guy siad nothing wrong with A/C unit. Could it be a faulty thermastat controlling the a/c
