1) If you have not taken a battery cable off in the last 60 to 100 miles of driving. Go by a parts store and have them run a OBD scan on the car. There could be a pending code that just has not kicked the MIL (Check Engine Light) on. What i am looking for is the P0500 code which would indicate the Speed sensor malufuntioned. The Variable Speed Sensor, also known as the VSS, is located on the transmission and will cause the speedometer to remain idle or fluctuate during acceleration if damaged. Corrosion on the connection could also result in speedometer malfunction, and is generally corrected by cleaning, repair or replacement. Trace the wires back and make sure that there are no loose connections or chafed or broken wires.
2) If that checked out good, The most common cause of speedometer malfunction is loose wires that plug into the back of the speedometer. Loose wires are often caused by improper placement when the vehicle was manufactured, or due to driving repeatedly over rough terrain. So pull the cluster and check the connection to the back of the speedometer and while your there look for any wires that could have been chafted or broken.
3)If all is good there check the fuse some times you can get weird speedomter actions from a loose or blown fuse.
These are things you could do first before taking it a costly repair shop.
