Excruciatingly Slow Cq43

My Compaq Presario CQ43-309AU runs painfully slow. It is unusable, and after start-up basically stops working. We get the little circle going around but nothing happens. It will not even shut down normally. The machine is running Windows 7 (32bit I think) with 2Gb RAM and an AMD Fusion E-300. I was wondering whether increasing RAM would help? The machine did not come with any discs so re-installing software may be an issue. Can anyone help please?
