Laptop Isn't Working When Taken Off Docking Station.

My laptop is connected through a docking station to an external monitor and keyboard so I can have dual screens when needed.  when i take it off the docking station, the laptop immediately turns to a black screen.  I am thinking there is a monitor display setting somewhere that is funky, but cannot locate it.
