Access For Repair

I need to find out what route to repair/replace fan switch on GE PP989DNBB downdraft cooktop.  I have the switch, but it looks like the glass top needs to come off to replace it.  Seems crazy, since it has a carbon fiber spindle that my wife managed to shear off, so I'm guessing it is a frequent repair.  I installed the cooktop, so I know that from underneath, a lot of disassembly of the vent housing, etc, would be required.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I am guessing this is not the last fan switch I will need to replace.
