Vacation Mode, Then Shut Down Completely On It's Own

Last night we didn't have hot water. Upon checking the water heater, I noticed the vacation mode light was green. I didn't set it to vacation mode, so I have no idea how that happened. I reset the water heater and it seemed to restart and product hot water as normal. This morning, the shower was warm but not hot so I checked it again. This time all the lights were out on the thermostat selector. I reset it again, and it seemed to light back up and looked normal. Any idea what could be going wrong?
