If that doesn't work, wrap the exhaust pipes near the starter with fireproof header pipe wrapping tape. That should be available at your local store as well.
A new starter would be my last choice if neither of the above work. You may need to buy a new starter, wrap it with a heat shield blanket and wrap the exhaust pipes as well.
My 1972 Road Runner drove me crazy with this exact same problem. The heat shield and exhaust wrap helped, but I still had to replace my starter every couple of years. The heat from the headers would seriously shorten the life of any starter I installed in it.
