Yellow Wrench Icon

The yellow wrench dashboard icon on my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid comes on periodically sometimes with 6 months in between appearances . It does not usually come on repeatedly, usually disappearing upon restart as mysteriously as it appeared. I do not notice any changes in my car's performance in any way. I cannot find any specific info as to what problems it might indicate. Ford, of course, advises that it be taken to a dealer and diagnosed ( for a fee of course). Wondering what others have experienced.

Powertrain Fault

Illuminates when a power train or AWD fault has been detected. Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.

If you search for information on the yellow wrench, you'll find it could be throttle body, to EGR valve, to oil cooler, a bad light, etc. It varies frome severe to minor. Without having it scanned, it would be guess work. You may be able to take to an independent garage or possibly a friend with a scanner and have it checked cheaper. But you really need to have it checked before any major damage is done.
