2003 Ford Ranger 4x4 Problem

The truck goes “CLUNK” when in 4 wheel drive. The 2003 Ford Ranger Reliability Rating from http://autos.msn.com says: “An occasional problem on this vehicle when equipped with 4 Wheel Drive is failure of the 4 Wheel Drive System. The cost to repair the 4 Wheel Drive System is estimated to range from $50.00 to $600.00 for parts and $65.00 to $195.00 for labor.” This does not tell me what the problem is or how to fix it????? I have spent the last 4 hours trying to figure this out.  Any ideas?!
