Blinking O/D light means a there is a tranmission fault code that was tripped and or it is overheating. Since you have transmission issues, the code will be able to pinpoint the area of failure. But based on your information and 178K miles on it, your probably looking at rebuilding or replacing the trans. Have it diagnosed by a reputable mechanic or trans expert.
