2001 Ford Explorer Hood Latch Does Not Engage The Hood.

Closing the hood will engage the latch you can manually move from the front of the car. However, the mechanism that actually secures the hood is not engaging. The internal hood release is working fine. Pushing or "slamming" the hood doesn't work either.
