This code refers to a "gross leak in the evaporative emission control system." This system connects to vapor hoses from the fuel tank, which are stored in a vapor storage canister under the hood. There is a purge valve on the vapor storage canister; which draws the vapor into the intake manifold when the motor is running. If any hoses are damaged or disconnected from the vapor storage canister, or from the fuel tank; that will cause this code to set. A gas tank filler cap that has a damaged seal or is not adequately tightened will also set the code. So can removing the gas tank filler cap while the motor is running. Things to look at/try first:

1. Fuel cap - just because it's tight doesn't mean much, there's a seal on there that can break down over time, this is an easy fix but be sure to replace it with an OEM part (the new fuel caps have an improved seal design)

2. Check all evap lines for cracks & leaks

3. Leak Detection Pump

4. Fuel pump seal - ring can come loose

5. Vacuum line at the purge valve
