There are a number of potential causes for this problem if your voltmeter was left with the batteries fitted and was left idle for around 6 months before you replaced the batteries:

1.Battery Installation: Make sure the new batteries are installed correctly by checking twice. Make sure the batteries are positioned correctly and are in touch with the terminals (this is usually indicated on the device or in the user manual).

2.Battery quality: New batteries can have faults. Make that the fresh batteries you placed are of high calibre and are charged completely.

3.Battery Compartment: Check the battery compartment for any corrosion, frayed wires, or other obstructions to the battery terminals that might be present. Use a soft brush or cotton swab to gently clean any corrosion you notice.

4.Check the fuse: To protect the device, certain multimeters feature a fuse. The fuse might have blown if the voltage was higher than what was allowed or if the metre had been operated incorrectly before it was left idle. To find and examine the fuse, see the device's instruction booklet.

5.Backlight/Display Contrast: It's conceivable that the settings for the display's backlight or contrast have changed. If your metre offers this function, try changing the contrast or turning on the backlight.

6.Reset: A reset feature is included on some multimeters. To check if there is a reset method you may try, see the user manual for your device.

7.Damage: If none of the aforementioned fixes work, it's conceivable that long-term inactivity caused internal damage to the voltmeter. You might need to have it checked out or fixed by a professional in this situation.

For precise troubleshooting instructions and details on your individual model, it is imperative to refer to the user handbook for your voltmeter. If you're not familiar with electronics or if you're unable to fix the problem on your own, think about hiring a professional technician or getting in touch with the manufacturer's customer care for more help.

Your multimeter probably damaged internal components over time if you left it in the "volts" mode when the batteries were low. Changing the batteries won't make the device work again. Clean contacts, examine the fuse, check battery polarity, and attempt a reset in accordance with the user handbook. The display might need to be professionally repaired or replaced if it stays blank since the depleted batteries could cause long-term damage.
