How Do I Stop Getting Automatically Generated 'friend Requests'?

I have gotten a number of messages from people requesting to be my friend. When I write to ask them if I know them, they write that they do not know me and that FB must have generated the link. Likewise, I have had friends personally email me saying that I have requested to friend them numerous times and that they do not use FB. This is strange given I had not personally sent a request to the friends that wrote. This trend has come up a number of times in the last few years. I am a physician, and this problem has become a professional/privacy issue. I have gone into privacy settings, but I have not been able to find anything related to my issue noted above.  Thank you for your assistance on this matter.

In your Facebook settings, you can make it so only your can friend people. So, any users who are not currently your friend will not be able to find you. This should "stem the tide" at least. The only downfall is people who you actually want to be friends with will have a harder time finding you.

Unfortunately, there is no good way to stop all friending activity.  Facebook now makes you offer the "Add Friend" option to all Friends of Friends, but that is as tight a restriction as you can make.  Evidentally, blocking auto-generated friend requests is viewed as antithesis of social networking.

It is possible to add people to a "Block List" under the Privacy settings, but obviously, the damage would have already been done.
