I Cannot Access My Facebook Account As The Email Address Associated With It No L

I cannot access my Facebook account as the email address associated with it no longer exists. Facebook suggests that if this happens you choose three friends to verify who you are. I do that and then press the link to send them messages. It always comes up saying 'Internal error. Please try again later.' I have - for about six weeks now. I would appreciate some advice on what to do - open a new account?
