The most common cause of a problem of this kind is that the incoming email was blocked in an attempt to filter out spam (even though that email was not really spam). This blocking may have been done by Hotmail or by special anti-spam software (that sometimes is part of an antivirus package).

Messages thought to be spam are sometimes (but not always) diverted to a folder designated Spam, Trash, Junk, or Deleted Items. If you know where to look, go to it. Or phone your ISP and ask.
