One quick way to find out if it is or is not a legitimate email is obviously the sender, emails from facebook will always read @facebook.com, however this can be changed with a email spoofing program, so the next way to validate authenticity, is to run your mouse over the clickable link, once your mouse pointer is is over the link look at the bottom of your screen, it will show you where the link is directing you to. In the case of websites that require personal information, they will almost always use this prefix HTTPS:// followed of course by the legitimate domain name, in this case it would look something like this, https://www.facebook. com...and so on, if it reads https://www.facebook. com (no space after the dot) you automatically know, this is a verified and legitimate email. There is a good chance it is a phishing email. Never click a link inside your email. It is best just to go to the website itself.

Even if the link points back to facebook.com, it could be a tojac app within facebook.
