How Did My Existing Account Get Replaced With A New One?

I needed to reset my password due to someone hacking into my page. I followed all of the instructions that was on the facebook help page. however, as soon as I logged in it was clear that it is not my account i have had for years, but a new one. Please tell me this can be fixed? :(
