Park the truck on a level surface, turn off the engine and engage the parking brake. Open the hood and use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal. Pull the cable off the negative battery post to disconnect the battery.
Remove the fuel filler cap. Stand in front of the engine compartment and locate the fuel pressure port. The port is covered with a plastic cap and protrudes off the metal fuel rail (the metal line the rubber fuel hose connects to). On the 8.0-liter engine, the fuel pressure port is located toward the front of the engine, protruding from the side of the pressure regulator. Pull the cap off the port and unscrew the lock nut until the port is open and you can hear and feel pressure leaving the port. When you hear or feel nothing more leaving the port, close the lock nut and replace the port cover.
Lay down and look under the passenger side of the Dodge pickup. Locate the fuel line. It is a rubber hose that runs along the top side of the frame rail from the engine compartment to the fuel filter (a small metal canister) and from the filter to the fuel tank. The ends of the hose at the engine, filter and fuel tank terminate in a connection to the metal fuel fittings.
Use a box knife to cut the new fuel line into two pieces. Make sure the new line is marked EFM/EFI as this is the only type of hose specifically designed for this replacement. One piece should fit between the metal fuel fitting that leads into the engine compartment and the fuel filter on the rail. The other piece should fit between the fuel filter and the metal fuel fitting that connects to the fuel pump.
Place a small glass container under the fuel filter where the hose that goes to the engine connects. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the screw on the hose clamp holding the fuel line onto the filter outlet connection. Pull the old hose off the filter connection and let any gas remaining in the line drain into the glass container. Save the hose clamp to be reused, the original clamps are of a special design so as not to cut into the casing of the hose.
Route the new line from the engine to the fuel filter. Remove the hose clamp from the oil line and place it over one end of the new line. Push the end of the hose onto the outlet connection on the filter and tighten the clamp screw to hold the hose in place. Remove the hose clamp from the opposite end of the fuel line (the end near the engine) and connect the new line to the fuel fitting there using the old hose clamp to hold it in place. Remove the old line.
Move the small glass jar so it is under where the fuel line from the gas tank connects to the inlet of the fuel filter. Loosen the screw on the hose clamp on the old fuel line, pull the hose off the filter inlet and allow any gas remaining in the line to drain into the glass jar.
Route the new line from the filter to the tank. Slide the clamp from the old fuel line onto one end of the new line and push the new hose onto the inlet of the filter. Tighten the clamp in place and attach the other end of the line to the outlet of the fuel pump after first removing the clamp and old hose. Remove the old line.
Secure the new line along its length with plastic zip ties. Replace the gas filler cap. Reconnect the battery and the project is done.
